Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Perth kickboxing Academy’s way.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Perth Kickboxing Academy style has No-Gi, ever! There are No-Gi’s in MMA so we don’t practice with one in our MMA gyms’s grappling classes. The positions that a grappler gan become confident and base their attacks off are very different between No-Gi and Gi Jiu Jitsu.
Traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has:
If you have trained Jiu Jitsu before this may sound familiar.
- Rolls, shrimps and warm up’s
- Technique demonstration
- Rolling to finish class
*We do essentially none of these things. This choice of timetable can be a problem for some people, if so please check out more traditional gyms.
Takedowns in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu vs MMA
Brazilian Jiu jitsu traditionally is weak on takedowns and but traditionally uses a Judo style trap and throw system. MMA has more of a freestyle wrestling stance and combines level change and strikes to set up takedowns instead of trips and hip throws.
We start this system immediately in our beginner classes, this creates a faster paced scramble and requires more athletic attributes like balance, flexibility and timing than the slower Gi style tie ups.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Perth
Our gym focus is competing and cross-training is several sports at once. Almost all of our grapplers are also training striking, there is limited time to learn techniques that don’t immediately translate to MMA. The position, over submission style approach to grappling changes without a Gi and escapes become even more important when strikes are introduced.
The position is often open for contention inMMA as soon as the top grappler frees a grip for a strike, therefore being able to initiate scrambles and come out on top with a high percentage is vital for MMA.
MMA and the Gi
The guards that are possible like Spider guard or 50/50 are either not possible or not practical for MMA. The position of guard in MMA is offensive for the person on top rather than the bottom, this changes the dynamics as a jiu jitsu expert may want guard and seek to hold you there where as in MMA it is a position that needs to be survived or escaped.
The lack of a Gi in MMA means collar and cuff controls that break posture and set up grip play are not possible and a greco style grip play is needed to have control of the head. Opening the guard is also ill advised unless it is to set up an escape because multiple attempts at throwing the legs up with no success will end up in a guard pass and less potential for submissions.
Combat Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Perth Kickboxing Academy
We train Brazilian Jiu jitsu Perth style and with the EBI rules and the Combat Jiu Jitsu rules. The rules of EBI and combat jiu jitsu have patched a lot of the holes that traditional BJJ had left when it diverged away from the Gracie street fighting style of the 80’s.
Although many of the first MMA fighters had a BJJ background in Gracie Jiu Jitsu the sports popularity lead to a tangent of competition style point scoring and weird approaches to some of the positions that would never have been considered in street fighting.
This was concerning to many senior Jiu Jitsu coaches and saw many attempts to move Jiu Jitsu back into an applicable self defence martial art, most notably with Rickson Gracies unified rules. However it appear that there has been no real progress in Gi Jiu Jitsu journey back into relevance for MMA so for now EBI and combat sambo seem to be the better platforms that serve as a half way between the two.
