Perth Kickboxing Academy: Club History
Established in 2010 Perth kickboxing Academy has had an interesting Journey to get to where it is now. Please read on and enjoy.
Rec Centre Morley YMCA
The club started in the group fitness room at the YMCA. With classes running staggered night and mixing it up between Boxing classes, Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The classes grew surprisingly well and within 3 months the numbers had grown to 10-15 per class. The equipment bags grew and the members kept turning up, so it was time to look for a full-time MMA gym.
Located behind the Dominos, the gym was almost 400sqm. Classes began immediately and after a lengthy setup period, the club was ready. With 5 classes running a night, two to three at the time there was a need to hire extra coaches. Luckily we were able to get some of the best in town and the clubs success skyrocketed. It was regular to see big names such as: Heavy Weight Boxing Champ Lucas Browne, Top 10 Heavy Weight Boxer Mark Demori, Ultimate Fighter Xavier Lucas, UFC fighter Steve Kennedy, World Superheavyweight Champion Steve Bonner, Pan Pacific Muay Thai champions Jamie Lunghitano and Marco Tentori. We also where the bass for the Bragging right Cage fighting series and all of the US fighters used the facility and showed their knowledge while they were in town.
The club was poised to become one of if not the biggest in town. With almost all of the big names in Combat sports walking in and out of the club. And Australias Largest cage fighting organisation based out of the gym, there was little competition as most of the local clubs did not exist back then.
Big Gym Fire
The gyms rapid success was due to be short-lived, however. Due to a Fire that started in the roof, the facility was all but destroyed in September 2013. Much of the equipment was destroyed and all of it had smoke and water damage due to the firefighters putting out the blaze. Not to be held back we ran classes at local rec centres and parks… But it was never to be the same.
Rebuild and New gym.
Despite the setback, the big gym gave us the opportunity to work with some of the best in Australia and the world. It also gave us an opportunity to re-asses our business direction, timetable and class syllabus. We decided against rebuilding a large scale commercial gym.the complete change of mission statement and class structure we consider a great step forward from our first attempt. We are pleased to welcome you to the Next incarnation of our gym Perth Kickboxing Academy, its latest and greatest form.
