Robert Whittaker Vs Yoel Romero 2
Australia’a only UFC champion and MMA super start Robert Whitaker is again taking on dynamic cuban wrestling silver medalist Yoel Romero as he defends his Middle weight title for the first time.
Whittaker was scheduled to meet Luke Rockhold in Perth Western Australia to make his first defence but was unable to due to injury. This was to be the first UFC event in Perth and perhaps one of the only chances for a title fight with an Australian champion ever. Despite Perths MMA fans missing out, the UFC fans will all be treated to an amazing rematch this weekend.
Boxing and Kickboxing vs wrestling
The match consists of Whitakers dangerous boxing skills and crafty kickboxing tricks vs Romeros ever present wrestling prowess. Although Romero has knock outs, he is not by any stretch a polished striker, at least defensively while Whittaker has great striking for MMA, he also is not world class in his striking as well. But what does this mean for MMA or the fight upcoming? The match up is intriguing again because Romeros striking is adequate to allow him to threaten a takedown, and Whitakers Striking is excellent compared to grapplers while his wrestling is adequate enough to allow him freedoms in this.
How it goes down
What remains to be seen is will the re healed Whitakers striking and wresting have improved due to his knee being stable or training and what Romeros striking can achieve. Whitakers wresting cant get to Yoel’s level, and Yoels wrestling cant get any better because its already the best there is in MMA. So its an arms race to who can improve their strikes or if Romero is able to combine his threats to and trick Whitaker into something.
For the Division
Yoels age is prohibitive for his longevity as a champion, although he does have a better chance at holding the belt then Whitaker does. Ultimately Whitaker will succumb to a better striker sooner rather than later. Thats how MMA works, much like Chuck Liddell was a better striker than all the wrestlers he faced. Whitaker has been (unsurprisingly) a better striker than all the grapplers he has faced. He will ultimately loose to someone like Till, Mousasi or even Gastelum. The UFC can match him with Rockhold or Weidman ad have some fireworks with most likely a Whitaker win, but eventually Till wont make welter, or gastelum dodges some bigger grapplers and will dethrone the Aussie.
